Simple newborn hat

This is an incredibly simple newborn hat, using only three stitches. For me, the only tricky part is remembering how to multiply the stitches for the base of the hat to get the right size, which is why I'm doing this post.

I used a bulky yarn and size M hook. The yarn was leftover from a roommate's project, so I don't know the actual weight, but it's probably around a 5. Since I used a bulky yarn and a large hook, it made the hat go by much quicker! I was able to knock this hat out in a few hours. It was for a coworker's baby shower and they don't know the gender of the baby yet, so the color and design is intended to be gender neutral. I did tell him, though, that I would add a flower to the hat if the baby turned out to be a girl :)

Enjoy!

Stitches:
Slip stitch (SS): insert hook into stitch, yarn over (YO), pull through both loops
Single crochet (SC): insert hook into stitch, YO, pull through one loop, YO, pull through both loops
Half double crochet (HDC): YO, insert hook into stitch, pull through one loop, YO, pull through all 3 loops

Round 1: Magic circle. Chain 1, place 9 HDC into circle, SS to join (10 stitches)
Alternately, if you don't want to do the magic circle, chain 4, SS to join. Place 10 HDC into circle, SS to join.
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 HDC into each stitch, ss to join (20 stitches)
Round 3: Ch 1, *1 HDC into next stitch, 2 HDC into next stitch,* repeat * all the way around, SS to join (30 stitches)
Round 4-10: Ch 1, 1 HDC into each stitch, SS to join
Round 11-14: Ch 1, 1 SC into each stitch, SS to join
Tie off and weave in the ends
